Epimedium Extract

Epimedium (scientific name: Epimedium brevicornu Maxim.) is a perennial herbaceous plant with a plant height of 20-60 cm. The rhizome is thick and short, dark brown, with two or three compound leaves on the base and stems, with a long stalk, and the leaflets are papery or Thick paper, leaf edges with spinous teeth, white or light yellow flowers, flowering period from May to June, and fruit period from June to August.

Epimedium grows in the understory, in ditch-side shrubs or in damp places on hillsides, at an altitude of 650-3500 meters. It is cultivated in Shaanxi, Gansu, Shanxi, Henan, Qinghai, Hubei, Sichuan and other regions in China.

The whole epimedium plant is used for medicinal purposes. It is mainly used to treat impotence and premature ejaculation, backache and leg pain, numbness of limbs, hemiplegia, neurasthenia, forgetfulness, tinnitus, and dizziness. Modern research shows that epimedium contains icariin, volatile oil, wax alcohol, phytosterols, tannins, vitamin E and other ingredients. It can stimulate sexual function and promote semen secretion in animals. It also has antihypertensive (causing peripheral vasodilation), hypoglycemic, diuretic, antitussive and expectorant, and vitamin E-like effects. Pharmacological experimental studies have shown that epimedium can increase cardiovascular and cerebrovascular blood flow, promote hematopoietic function, immune function and bone metabolism, and has anti-aging, anti-tumor and other effects.
